The Book Group is designed for staff and volunteers of nonprofit and government agencies to gather and discuss issues related to the health of the region, nonprofit management, and other issues relevant to their work in the community.
All those who work or volunteer at nonprofit or municipal agencies in MetroWest are welcome to attend. Professionals can attend some of the groups with no commitment to attend all meetings.
We will have a robust breakfast discussion about Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande. The book, whose author is a practicing surgeon, addresses the profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gwande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.
If you have trouble obtaining a copy of the book, please ask and we can lend you one.
